Shortly after arriving at Valley View Sports Park in El Dorado Hills, California, John Brown found himself engaged in a conversation with the opposing coach about his youngest son, Amon-Ra St. Brown. It was Halloween 2008, and as 9-year-old Amon-Ra warmed up for the Yorba Linda Bulldogs, coach Brian Liles revealed a peculiar secret to John.
"We nicknamed your son Freddy," Liles told John, to which John responded with confusion, "Who's Freddy? His name is Amon-Ra."
"In practice, as we were getting ready for you guys, we called him Freddy because all the kids are afraid of him, like Freddy Krueger," Liles said.
The moniker stemmed from Amon-Ra's dominant performance that day. Playing multiple positions—tailback, slot receiver, and middle linebacker—he left a lasting impression on the field. Amon-Ra's intensity was well-known, even causing a memorable incident where he knocked out a tooth of an opponent.
Reflecting on this nickname, Amon-Ra said, "I always played up, so I was a younger kid playing against 10-year-olds. And so, I always had to go a little harder because kids were always a little older than me, but I was mean [when] I was young," St. Brown said. "Always mean. I played middle linebacker, used to hit dudes crazy so that's why some of the kids called me that because I was mean. That's real."
Fifteen years later, Amon-Ra St. Brown is a formidable force in the league. His exceptional performance in recent games has drawn comparisons to NFL legends, thanks to his relentless dedication and commitment.
At the age of 7, Amon-Ra's father, John, instilled a sense of discipline in him and his siblings. A simple challenge involving nightly push-ups taught them a fundamental life lesson: if you commit to something, you follow through. This early discipline, coupled with a rigorous training regimen and healthy diet, shaped Amon-Ra's work ethic and determination.
Amon-Ra's drive to succeed extends beyond personal achievements. He envisions a Super Bowl victory, not just for himself but for his team. His desire to motivate his teammates and build a winning team reflects his intense passion for the game. Amon-Ra's unwavering determination and focus have made him a standout player, even among those drafted ahead of him in 2021. Despite being the 17th wide receiver selected, his record-breaking receptions speak volumes about his talent and tenacity.
